Cleaning Compensation Standards
This English translation is provided for convenience. In case of any discrepancy, the Japanese original shall prevail.
Adapted from the "Cleaning Accident Compensation Standards" of the National Federation of Cleaning Environmental Sanitation Industry Cooperatives.
- Unless the cleaner can prove that the cause of the accident lies with another party's negligence, the cleaner shall compensate the affected customer. However, when the customer's own negligence contributed to the accident, a portion of the compensation may be reduced.
-
Unless there is a separate special agreement, the compensation amount is calculated as follows:
Compensation =
the item's replacement cost (market price of a new item of the same quality at the time of the accident) ×
the compensation ratio defined in Table (2), corresponding to the number of months elapsed since the item was purchased. [Refer to Tables (1) and (2)]
-
When the above calculation is not appropriate — for example, when a garment has been lost — the following calculation is used:
(1) Dry cleaning: 40 times the cleaning fee
(2) Laundry: 20 times the cleaning fee - 4. When the cleaner delivers the item affected by the accident at the same time as the compensation payment, the compensation may be reduced in part with the customer's consent.
- If 90 days pass from the day the cleaner received the item without the customer picking it up, and the delay is attributable to the customer, the cleaner shall not be liable for losses arising from the delay in pickup.
- If, upon receipt of the items, the customer provides the cleaner with a certificate confirming that the items were verified and received without objection, payment of compensation under these standards may be declined.
- These standards shall not apply once 6 months have passed since the customer received the item, or 1 year has passed since the cleaner received the item (if cleaning normally takes longer, the excess days are added).
- In the event of a dispute regarding the application of these standards, the Cleaning Accident Compensation Review Committee will, upon application, provide its judgment.

Notes
Within the compensation ratio, Grade A / B / C depends on the condition of the item and is applied as follows:
Grade A: In superior condition relative to the time elapsed since purchase.
Grade B: In an ordinary condition consistent with the time elapsed since purchase.
Grade C: In poorer condition than Grade B relative to the time elapsed since purchase.
(Examples)
1. For a dress shirt, evaluation is based on wear at the collar, cuffs, and similar areas.
2. Items with repair marks or permanent discoloration are typically classified as Grade C.
